3rd and 43

So there are those who know Jacory Harris, and then there are those who doubt Jacory Harris. While wearing a soft cast all week, Jacory Harris said over and over again that he would play. Randy Shannon said he would play. Still, people doubted him. Coming off a tough loss and an sub par performance Jacory Harris responded with yet another 300 yard passing performance. This one was for 348 which is the most since the season opener up at Tallahassee. It was clear early on that the injury was bothering him but anyone who has followed this young man’s career understands that he is all about leading his team and winning ball games and the thought of coming out of the game was not an option for Jacory Harris.

Jacory showed his confidence when he saw the Duke players jumping up and down cheering in the tunnel when he told them. “Hey, yall gotta come that down because you ain’t gonna be happy after this game.”

With Jacory’s injury and doubt from the “fans” about this team, Leonard Handerson (143 yards) and Jimmy Graham (73 yards) both had career games. Damien Berry played another great game and has now scored a rushing Touchdown in 7 consecutive games. Vaughn Telemaque laid the wood on a Duke Wide Receiver in the 4th Quarter and senior Darryl Sharpton playing in his final home game as a Hurricane got his first interception and returned it 73 yards for a Touchdown. It closed out a 4th Quarter in which the Canes outscored the Blue Devils 21-0.

James? Cooper? How's Berry sound? Damien leads the Canes in rushing TDs (8) and yards per carry (6.1).

With one game remaining on the regular season schedule the “U” faces the bulls of USF (which we will talk about later this week). Miami needs to win this game to help get into the best bowl game possible with the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the Gator Bowl and the Champs Bowl all possibilities.

Remember one thing this week. If at any point for any reason you start to doubt Jacory Harris, close your eyes, remind yourself how many times he has proved you wrong, relax, and then watch him do it again.

The Miami Hurricanes out gained North Carolina by more than 100 yards, had 7 more first downs, had less penalty yards, had a better 3rd down conversion percentage, converted twice on 4th down, played well on Defense and moved the ball at will on Offense. But none of that mattered. The stat that matters is that the Canes were out scored 33-24, and the reason for that is 4-0 turnover margin. Throwing four interceptions and having two of them returned for Touchdowns is what cost Miami the game. We have a great young sophomore Quarterback who has put the team on his back several times and won the game. This time he put the team on his back and lost the game. I can live with that.

Apparently other people can’t. The sports radio shows and internet message boards have been polluted with stupidity. Ripping Jacory and questioning if he is really the Quarterback we thought he could be. If you question or doubt Jacory Harris chances are you don’t know enough about him or you don’t know enough about football. Jacory does not lack confidence. And no matter how tough things may get, that will never change. When he was hit up in Tallahassee it resulted in a pick six and he didn’t have any feeling in his ring or pinky finger. So he went right back at it resulting in a come from behind win on the road at FSU and breaking a school record for passing yards against the Seminoles. In his final pass of the game where he connected with Travis Benjamin on a 40 completion in double coverage to set up the game winning Touchdown he had confidence. He is a great Quarterback and when he makes mistakes he usually takes it upon himself to try and win the game. A bunch of Miami “fans” used that as a complaint in these last 24 hours. No one said Labor Day Night that Jacory was too aggressive throwing into double coverage to beat FSU. It was a play that later that night he recalled “I saw Travis, and I was like, man the Cornerback is going to get to this. Let me just take a chance.” So he did and we won. He opened up the Oklahoma game with two interceptions. But the young Quarterback with “U SWAG” in his hair bounced back to throw three touchdowns and win the game 21-20. If anyone remembers, that Touchdown pass to Dedrick Epps coming out of halftime it was in a sea of Oklahoma players but Jacory, who was unrattled by his early interceptions took a chance, fired it in there, and took the lead. I also remember him throwing a pick six to Clemson and responding by throwing a 69 yard Touchdown to Travis Benjamin immediately after. I don’t remember complaints about his aggressive style after those Touchdowns. Even in Jacory’s Semi-Finals in his senior year against Deer Field Beach when he took over on his own 1 yard line he began the drive with a wide receiver screen that was incomplete. How Dangerous is that? A screen on the one yard line? There were groans in the stadium that would soon be cheers of celebration after the Quarterback drove his team 99 yards to win the game.

He is unaffected by good plays or bad plays. Thank God for that! Can you imagine going back to having a Quarterback who could be rattled by early interceptions? I love that Jacory comes out guns blazing no matter the score or his stats. The guy wants to win no matter what and will do anything to make sure that happens. I remember the days when we would get behind in a game and the Orange Bowl crowd would moan and groan that we are too conservative. I would hate to have a Quarterback who cowered down if he threw a few bad passes to start a game. I love having a Quarterback who was struggling in a rainy game in Wake Forest but went out, took some chances, and led the team down the field to win the game in the final minute. And even though he threw 4 interceptions against North Carolina – Am I glad he still kept slinging it to try and get us back in the game? You better believe it. I obviously don’t like the result of the game. But I love the mentality of go for it. Three times on 4th down we went for it, and got it twice. One time on 4th and 10 Coach Shannon went for it and Jacory moved the chains. He has a confidence about him that makes him magnetic in a locker room where he is the unquestioned leader. He will probably be breaking Bernie Kosar’s records for single season passing yards and passing Touchdowns later this year.

No one should be happy about interceptions. But to criticize Jacory’s aggressiveness now is pretty ridiculous. That same aggressiveness, confidence, swagger or whatever else you want to call it has won us plenty of games this year (including come from behind victories against FSU, Oklahoma and Wake Forest) and will win us some very big games in the future. This team will win and lose games based on Jacory Harris. And that is exactly what it should be. The team should be centered around its best player, and its leader. And before all is said and done he will lead this team to a National Championship. And he will have the same confidence that night as he did yesterday. His demeanor and confidence in this team is the same after a Touchdown as it is after an interception. He is the eye of a Hurricane in a sense with his calmness despite all the commotion around him. His confidence never wavers despite the outcome of any given play unlike the fans who change after each game and each play. I truly pity the fans who don’t see the big picture. When he holds up that crystal ball I wonder if they will remember how we got there.

The University of Miami will be a part of a special Nike uniform promotion this month. Nike has designed special one time uniforms for ten big time programs. Generally I think Nike tries these new uniform ideas and they just look horrible, but from the uniform pictures that have leaked on the internet from other teams they actually look great. Miami will be wearing their new uniforms on the road November 28 when they play USF. It is rumored that Miami will be wearing white jerseys and white pants. The shoes will also be a different color along with the newly designed gloves which is the only thing leaked from the Miami uniform so far. When the two palms are put together from the gloves it makes the U, along with pictures of a Hurricane from a radar screen.

From what I have seen so far all the teams will be wearing different helmet designs and colors as well. FSU will have black helmets and VT will have white helmets. TCU will have red horns painted on symbolizing venomous blood that the horned toad sprays at enemies. I’m kind of hoping they don’t touch the helmet but for the most part the newly designed helmets look really sharp. Texas is wearing their throw back helmets with the numbers, so maybe we will wear our throw back helmets, either the old gold helmet with the Hurricane flags, the green one with the U, or maybe a newly designed helmet all together. Nike has been keeping things pretty close to the vest and for now it is unknown when the uniforms will be unveiled. All Canes will be getting a small shipment of the very limited jerseys and from what I know only # 12 will be sold for this jersey design. Each program will also have a theme name for the uniform with Miami’s being “The U knows”.

Miami “The U knows” vs. USF

TCU “Don’t Back Down” vs. Utah

Virginia Tech “Good Guys Wear White” vs. Maryland

Florida State “Fear the Spear” vs. Maryland

Ohio State “Earned” vs. Michigan

Oklahoma “Stake our Claim” vs. Oklahoma State

Texas “It Only Takes Eleven” vs. Texas A&M

Missouri “Beast Mode” vs. Kansas

Florida “Finish the Mission” vs. Florida State

LSU “Cochon De Lait” vs. Arkansas

I think that LSU’s slogan is the best it is a French term that means suckling pig. It is a Cajun pig that people eat which is very appropriate since they are playing the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Canes recently landed their biggest commitment in quite some time. Eduardo Clements, the Booker T. Washington star Running Back (who grew up an FSU fan), has publicly announced his commitment to the Hurricanes. Clements revealed that he has been a silent commitment to Miami since before the season started but had planned on keeping it a secret until National Signing Day in February.

Eduardo Clements

Clements is the fourth Running Back commitment of the 2010 class. He joins Maurice Hagens, Darion Hall and Storm Johnson (yeah, bad ass name for a Hurricane). Clements is the slash back of the group. He is listed at 5’10 and 185 lbs. He has great speed and excellent hands out of the backfield. He is a threat to score at any given time and could be compared to Brian Westbrook of the Philadelphia Eagles. Clements was the player of the game when he helped lead his team to a State Championship his sophomore year along with then Booker T Seniors: Brandon Harris, Davon Johnson and Thearon Collier.

Maurice Hagens is the next Patrick Hill of the group. Hagens, from Tampa, FL, is listed at 6’1 and 235 lbs. He should be a great fullback for Miami with his tough run blocking. He is also a tough runner having rushed for over 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior year.

Darion Hall brings balance to the table for the Canes. Hall from Naples, FL is listed at 6’1 and 200 lbs. He rushed for nearly 1,800 yards his junior year and added another 200 yards receiving. Storm Johnson from Georgia is listed at 6’1 and 215 lbs. He is a big High School Running Back who racked up 1,300 rushing yards and 23 Touchdowns his junior year often being pulled out early since his team often had lopsided victories on their way to a State Championship.

The Canes will be LOADED at Running Back next year. Javarris James will be graduating and unless he leaves early Cooper will be a senior. Damien Berry has been running like a man on a mission this year and could be starting next year. Lee Chambers has shown flashes. Mike James has been terrific as a true freshman playing Fullback, Halfback and even Kick Returner. Lamar Miller, one of the most talented freshman on the team, is red shirting and will hit the ground running next year as our biggest and fasted Back on the squad. And then you add in these four talented incoming freshmen. We started this decade loaded at Running Back with guys like Clinton Portis, James Jackson, Najeh Davenport, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee, Jarrett Payton and even D.J. Williams in the backfield for a year. The Canes are loading up the stable again and Whipple with more weapons could be a very dangerous thing. It looks like the Running Backs are catching up to the Wide Receivers with a variety of talents.

Giving the other writer on this site, yeah the one that hasn’t done anything in weeks, score updates was incredibly painful on Saturday. And that image pretty much sums up the first half (until a successful 2 minute 33 second drive in which we had…whua? 3 time-outs to work with? That can’t be right. All this time I thought Randy Shannon thought he would be penalized if he went in to halftime with time-outs remaining.) At the half you had to be concerned about the defense. Injuries which usually aren’t a big deal to the Hurricanes because of their depth are actually a factor this year. The defensive line still can’t produce adequate pressure. Without Sean Spence the linebacking core is BAD and they couldn’t stop anyone. But even the defenders who have been good this season that weren’t injured (Brandon Harris) played bad in this game. There was only one good defensive play by Miami in the first half (Allen Bailey’s sack).

But the offense just scored a touchdown, they would be fine right? I mean besides the first game of the season every time Jacory Harris has taken the field to start the second half the Canes have scored a touchdown on their opening drive. Say goodbye to that streak. The first two drives of the 3rd quarter the offense went 3 and out. They were able to get a first down on the third drive, but they would of been better off with the 3 and out – a 14 yard sack on first down led to an interception on third. After a first down on first down during drive number 4 Harris followed up with 2 incompletes and another sack ending the worst quarter of the year for the Hurricane offense.

When the 4th quarter came around the Hurricanes needed to catch a break. On Matt Bosher’s 8th punt of the game (he would have 9 in total) and the first punt that the returner did not call for a fair catch, Devon Brown just dropped the ball. How many times did they expect their return man to catch a punt? This is Wannstedt ball at it’s finest keep punting until the other team screws up. Canes capitalize with a score on a drive that starts on the Wake 2 yard line.

Orlando Franklin throws Travis Benjamin like Jacory Harris throws footballs.

This is the first game that I doubted Jacory Harris – he just kept chucking the ball down-field to anyone who was around. It just looked dreadful and I wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to bring us back. Before their 1:08 – 82 yard scoring drive the Canes had 21 yards in total offense in the 2nd half. I will never doubt Jacory Harris again. Harris started the drive throwing 2 out of 6 completions – one on 3rd and 10 and one on 4th and 16. He wouldn’t miss again. In my post about the Clemson game I likened Jacory Harris to Dwyane Wade in matters of clutch. Before the Wake Forest game I was thinking that was a really stupid thing to write as Wade has won a NBA championship and Olympic gold medal due to his clutchness. But after this game Jacory is making me look like I somewhat know what I’m talking about. Keep slinging it Heart Attack.
